Cannot get rid of chrome from 8.5 on Ubuntu

I have a similar problem on an Acer One running Ubuntu netbook edition and an AMD 64 desktop also running Ubuntu. I set Chrome as the default browser some time ago but after recent 'upgrades' to Ubuntu I found Chrome not working properly. Particulary the tabs being all red and the little crosses unreadable. I changed the default in the OS to Firefox but Notes still insists on opening Chrome on both machines when mail links are clicked.
